The action is intense when it happens but the time between is just as tense in a different way. The two main characters are interesting. Both have a lot of secrets.

The dialogue between the two main characters is nicely done and natural. Dialogue in the post apocalypse tends to be minimal because of the zombies, plague, vampires, alien invaders, etc. That doesn't mean that it shouldn't reflect the character's mental state or course of action and be realistic, appropriate to the speaker's personality and circumstances. The dialogue in the book does all of that.
The others are a broad spectrum of the types that you would expect to survive in the post apocalyptic world. They get just enough attention for you to get a feel for the new world. I think the writing is better than a lot that I've read this year.
The bulk of the action involves, killing human beings who have lost their humanity. These are the sociopaths not the ghouls. They trade in slaves, murder and rob travelers and sometimes practice cannibalism. These characters get just enough attention for the reader to agree with the other characters that these individuals must be killed.
The plot is a solid beginning for a series but for a stand alone book, it's not enough. The main characters are not yet fleshed out enough to qualify the book as a complete story. This is more like an episode in a TV horror show but with less closure.
The questions that I have concern the ghouls. Where did they come from? How did they win their war against humans? What is the Walk Out? How did humans manage to break the dominance of the ghouls? These events have been decided by the writer to have occurred, so deal with it. I don't like that answer but it's all there is for now.
This is a little different from the usual post apocalyptic landscapes,. You might enjoy this series.
...moreDo yourself a favor and read these books.
...more....continuation of The Purge series!!! Totally different characters but the same time line and the same type of bad guys. Still loads of action and a very interesting 'good guy'!!!!

I was a big fan of The Walking Dead, until it jumped the shark (at least in my opinion!) so when Aaron Shedlocked mentioned this book in a FB live he did, I jumped at the chance to listen. Requiem is really entertaining. Everything that happened worked to move the story along. There's a lot of build-up in this book as to what's to come for Wash, and Ana, but I liked that there was resolution to one aspect, at least for Ana. Sometimes the first book in a series can feel like it's just the beginning- introducing the characters and laying the groundwork, without much of an actual story, but Requiem had it all, while definitely leaving me wanting more! I'm so intrigued by the old man, if there's a story behind the watch, who's the one-eyed blue-eyed ghoul! I can't wait to see what's going to happen next. I'm not sure if I'll have the patience to wait for the audiobook of Tokens, I may just have to grab the ebook to satisfy my curiosity.
After checking on GR I see that Requiem is a spin-off/continuation of another series by the author, but to be honest, I didn't feel like I was missing anything. I thought there was enough info given about the Ghouls and the Purge to make it easy to jump right into this series. But I do think I'll have to go back to see where it all began!
Aaron Shedlock is such a terrific narrator, I really need to listen to more books with him. He's got such a great raspy voice, it was perfect for how I'd picture Wash's character. I also really like how he doesn't overly "act" with the female voices, just changes his voice enough so you know he's voicing a female. I hope he's lined up to do book 2 in this series- even if I read it I'll for sure come back to listen!

My advice though- if you haven't read any books in the Purge universe yet, first of all I envy your virginity, but in all seriousness you can't start here. You have to read them all in order.
THEN, in a month you can read about Wash and Ana.
I can NOT wait for the next book in this series, (and the next Keo book as well) this book was a huge surprise for me and it was very welcome. I did read it way too fast though.
As long as Sam keeps writing about the Purge universe, I will be a rabid fan and keep reading. Do yourself a favor and dive in!
Cheers!
A fresh take on the "zombie apocalypse" genre. Rather than zombies we have mindless vampire-like ghouls who were apparently lead by intelligent and mysterious blue eye ghouls. Our two characters cross paths by chance as they pursue their own monsters. The relationship they develop over time is well done and believable. They enemies they face are well portrayed. The fights are a bit unbelievable, but lacking the "hero armor" which is common in fiction.
The story is also complete. Unlike many series in which the first book has a blatant cliffhanger, this one wraps up the heroine's story arc and essentially ends with our hunter going off into the sunrise on his next adventure.
I definitely want to read the second book and hope our two characters will be reunited.
...moreLoved the characters, loved the setting--so real and immersive. The ghouls were perfectly horrid, and the Big Bad was suitably scary. Rather than auto buy the next in this series, that abandonment will cause me to download a sample, first. If they're not back together before the sample ends, I'll hesitate to buy, simply because I loved the abandoned character just a touch more than the protag and won't be happy reading half a novel (or whole one? I'll be constantly wondering) without her.

I've listened to Aaron Shedlock in multiple romance audiobooks, so it was really neat to listen to one of his performances that was a different genre. As usual, he brings us another fabulous performance and represents all of the characters well, especially Wash. He is one of my all time favorite narrators in general, so this listen was a real treat for me.
I received a review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Once again, Sam Sisavath has reminded me that no matter what terrors the future hold, other humans will ALWAYS be the most terrifying things in the dark. You don't have to read the earlier books in this series (they have different characters), but if you get the chance, you should. It tells you how it all started for humans fighting against the only creatures in the dark that might be as scary as we are. I will be reading the rest of this character's timeline, as fast as I can download it!

A whole new set of characters struggling through the world since the Purge! The new storyline roars through the pages as the survivors of the Purge struggle for life in the new world. Great action, terrific plot and brilliantly vibrant characters combine to promise an exciting new series!
...moreSam Sisavanth is one of the few writers who will hold your interest regardless of the number of books in a series. His plots are interesting and exciting and well thought out. His characters are well crafted, diverse, humorous and above all believable. If you have not read the original series, The Purge, by all means get it. This current series is an offshoot of the original and can stand alone.
This is an author you will want to follow. You won't be sorry.

I think I like the gunplay the best, Wash reminds me of Roland of the Dark Towers. The book moves fast and the story is never boring. I would like to know more about the old man and the watch, what's up with that. Looking forward to next installment.

...moreI read a lot. I go through books like most people go through a jug of milk, so I'm always looking for books and series that are well written and long.
This book was interesting and the characters were very well written. The story was engaging and never felt like it was lagging. The main character, Wash was believable and like able.
I look forward to reading more of this series and author.
So I have read every Purge book including the Road to Babylon series and I just can't get enough. That is over 14 books in the last three weeks that I have had a hard time putting down. Every character is just as good as the last, and Wash and Ana are no different. I could read 40 more books based on the Purge and not get tired. Sam Sisavath does not falter in his writing. Each book is equally as rivetting as the first.

This book takes place after the Great Walk Out, and within a few pages, I am hooked on new characters bringing their own attitudes and ways of surviving. Ana and Wash are great for each other. I look forward to the next book. Sam Sisavath never disappoints his fans.
I always love a great post apocalyptic story, and this one definitely is one. Wash and Ana are great characters together, I felt I laughed with them. I was needing a new series to read until the next comes out for voodoo plague. Definitely feel I found a great one.
Two likable, interesting main characters to continue the adventure. Multi-dimensional and warrior-like. Can't wait for the next installment. I have read all of them except Mason. I don't like the guy. Anyway, I have read all of them and am waiting for the next one. Thanks, Sisavath!

I am pleased with the different direction this story has taken... you get a taste of another kinda apocalypse background, which is both captivating and well written.
I am a big fan of Sam Sisavath. I like Wash and Ana and look forward to their journey. My only criticism is the long fighting scenes and that hasn't changed from the Purge series.
